What Powers NASA's Spacecraft?

There are no gas stations or power outlets in space. That's why NASA's Curiosity rover on Mars--and some other NASA spacecraft that explore the solar system--use something called "radioisotope power." NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory is working with the Department of Energy on ways to make the next generation of radioisotope power systems even more powerful and capable. This video explains more. Why Clean Coal Is a Myth

(via D-News) Coal is cheap, efficient, and plentiful-- but horrible for the environment. What about clean coal? Does clean coal exist? Send to a Friend |

The Company Determined to Fix Nuclear Energy

Video by The Atlantic Meet the leaders of TerraPower, a new company that hopes to solve some of nuclear energy's biggest challenges. TerraPower is one of Bill Gates's biggest bets in the search for an energy miracle—and their strategy is to tackle the issues that surround nuclear energy head on in order to mitigate its problems. Gates looked at solar and wind energies, but according to John Gilleland, CTO of TerraPower, "Nuclear is the only source of energy which could provide the necessary huge quantities that we need on a global basis." Read more about Gates's commitment to moving the world beyond fossil fuels in the November 2015 issue of The Atlantic. The Surprising Places We Waste Energy

(via It's Okay to Be Smart) We use a LOT of energy, but we waste a lot too. Where that waste happens might surprise, you though. We don’t just waste energy when we leave the lights on or the thermostat cranked down too low. It happens at the dinner table and the water faucet as too! Send to a Friend |

Will We Ever Run Out of Oil?

(via It's Okay to Be Smart) We’ve heard news of “peak oil” and “the end of the oil age” for years now, but we keep coming up with ways to find and pump more of it to the surface. Rising CO2 levels and the changing climate that results from burning fossil fuels mean that we should probably stop using oil sooner rather than later, though. Send to a Friend |

A Brief History of Nuclear Power

(via Kurz Gesagt) Nuclear Energy is a controversial subject. The pro- and anti-nuclear lobbies fight furiously, and it's difficult to decide who is right. So we're trying to clear up the issue - in this video we discuss how we got to where we are today, as the basis for discussion. Next week we'll be looking at the arguments for and against nuclear power in detail. Send to a Friend |

Does Recycling Actually Help?

(via D-News) We are told every day that we should be recycling, but why? What happens to plastic bottles when they’re not recycled? Send to a Friend |

How to Create Cleaner Coal

(via TEDEd) It takes a lot of fuel to heat our homes, preserve our food, and power our gadgets. And for 40 percent of the world, cheap, plentiful coal gets the job done. But coal also releases pollutants into the air, causing environmental damage like acid rain and serious health problems. Can we create a cleaner version of coal? Emma Bryce details the three ways we might strip coal of its foul forces. Send to a Friend |

The Future Of Clean Nuclear Energy

(via D-News) Nuclear power has been around for decades, and it accounts for 19% of energy in the United States. Julian is here to discuss how scientists are now looking at how molten salt reactors might be changing the way we create energy. Send to a Friend |
