Teams: Texas Tech Red Raiders (9-3) vs. #21 Virginia Cavaliers (8-4)
Betting Line: Texas Tech is favored by 6 points.
Brief History: Having started in 1946, this is one of the older bowl games in existence. The game was played in Gator Bowl Stadium until 1993, when the stadium was partially demolished during the construction of ALLTEL Stadium (now known as Jacksonville Municipal Stadium) on the same site.
Fun Fact: It was in the 1978 game between Ohio State and Clemson where Buckeyes coach Woody Hayes clotheslined Charlie Bauman on the sideline in front of a national television audience. Hayes was dismissed the next day by Ohio State's Board of Trustees.
Notable Schwag for the Players: Jostens ring, Oakley Thump sunglasses and a two-piece Mercury Luggage set.
Preview: Virginia ranked third in the ACC in scoring defense, allowing just under 19 points per game. Texas Tech enters the game averaging nearly 42 points per game (sixth best in the NCAA), including two games with more than 50 points. Clearly something will have to give.
The Cavs' defense, led by defensive end Chris Long will have their work cut out for them, as they face a Red Raiders offense that features quarterback Graham Harrell (441.5 passing yards/game and and 45 touchdowns) and wide receiver Michael Crabtree, a freshman who led the country in touchdown catches (21), receptions (125) and receiving yards (1,861)
