Hansen Lucks Out on Draw

With a large field and all the bumping and crowding and blocking that comes with it, the draw for the post positions has become a vital part of the race lore. Top 3-year-old Lookin' at Lucky fell afoul of the dreaded No. 1 post two years ago but went on to stardom in his post-Derby career. And the No. 20 post didn’t stop Big Brown from scoring an impressive victory in 2008.

With a deep and talented 20-horse field, and an also-eligible, My Adonis, added to the list for the first time, the draw created less hubbub than usual. People seemed to have less to gripe about, and oddsmaker Mike Battaglia didn’t budge from his odds decisions made a couple of days before the draw. But what can Derby-fevered bettors take from what happened late Wednesday afternoon at Churchill Downs?
