The league fined Suh $7,500 for treating Cleveland Browns quarterback Jake Delhomme like a discarded rag doll in the third exhibition game. Big deal. It should have suspended him for next Sunday's opener in Chicago if it's truly serious about prohibiting extracurricular punishment against prized passers.
Hitting the quarterback is part of the game. The attempted maiming of one, though, is considered by the league a capital offense, deserving of far more than a 15-yard penalty during the game and a lighter wallet afterward.
But the NFL didn't have the required backbone in taking the necessary disciplinary stand this time.
