They played well into the next morning, the rain beating down on the last stalwart fans in the Bronx. Then all of a sudden, around 1:07 a.m., the Angels finally cracked and the Yankees took hold of this series, packed up and headed West with a sense of manifest destiny.
It was Small Ball that beat the Angels in the end, a touch of irony. Melky Cabrera grounded to Maicer Izturis, who fielded the ball, looked for the force and hurled it way wide of second base for a throwing error. Jerry Hairston, of all people, went flying around third base and scored on the misplay.
